Togo dog pack from Seleverkstedet
Size XL
Seleverkstedet's classic - the sturdy Togo pack. Ergonomically designed with panniers sized to fit the dog. Leather and 1000-denier coated nylon, along with sturdy seams, make the Togo pack highly durable. The TOGO pack was introduced in 1982 and has for many years been in a class of its own when it comes to quality and carrying comfort for the dog.
The volume of the pack in relation to the size (the bags and the raised lid) has been made as large as is appropriate for the dog to carry, without restricting the dog's freedom of movement.
How to choose the right size pack
Measure the dog from elbow, over the back, and down to the elbow on the other side. The point of the elbow is the highest visible joint on the front leg, the one the dog rests on when lying down. If the measurement on your dog matches the stated measurement on the pack, you have the right size.
If the measurement falls between two sizes, you should consider how you intend to use the pack:
- If it is for short trips where the dog will carry some equipment, our experience is that most people are most satisfied with the smaller of the two sizes.
- If you are planning longer trips with a lot of gear, and the dog is well-trained and has good ground clearance, you can choose the larger of the two sizes.
Ground clearance means that the dog has enough height so that the pack does not drag too low against the vegetation.
Togo pack sizes (AA-measurement):
- Mini from 43 cm minimum AA-measurement
- Mini+ approx. 48 cm
- XXS approx. 57 cm
- XS approx. 61 cm
- S approx. 65 cm
- M approx. 71 cm
- L approx. 82 cm
- XL approx. 92 cm
How old must the dog be to carry a pack?
It is an advantage if the dog is fully grown so that you can choose a size that will continue to fit. However, an empty pack does not weigh much more than a thick dog coat, so getting the dog used to wearing something on its back with low weight is only positive. You should expect that you will only be able to fully utilize the carrying capacity of the pack once the dog is 18 months old.
How heavy a pack can the dog carry?
How you work with your dog from an early age is up to you as a dog owner. Is the dog used to hiking and is it a healthy and strong dog? Have you been diligent in developing the dog through hikes in varied terrain? Large dogs develop more slowly than small dogs. Remember to always start carefully with weight when you begin packing. Watch how the dog walks; if you see that it is struggling, it is too much weight. If the dog trots along easily, you can add more. As mentioned in the paragraph above, your dog must be fully grown before you can load it with any significant weight. A rule of thumb is that a very well-trained dog can carry up to 25% of its own body weight if the terrain is easy and the trip is not too long. There is a big difference between walking on flat ground versus walking in rugged terrain with inclines. Use common sense and remember that you know your dog best, so watch closely and read the signals your dog gives you.
