Togo dog pack from Seleverkstedet
Size L
Seleverkstedet's classic - the sturdy Togo pack. Ergonomically designed with panniers sized for packing based on the dog's size. Leather and 1000-denier coated nylon, along with robust seams, make the Togo pack extremely durable. The TOGO pack saw the light of day in 1982 and has for many years been in a class of its own when it comes to quality and carrying comfort for the dog.
The volume of the pack in relation to size (the panniers and the raised lid) is made as large as is appropriate for the dog to carry, without restricting the dog's freedom of movement.
How to choose the right pack size
Measure the dog from elbow, over the back, and down to the elbow on the other side. The point of the elbow is the highest visible joint on the front leg, the part the dog rests on when lying in a "down" position. If your dog's measurement matches the specified measurement of the pack, you have the right size.
If the measurement is between two sizes, you should consider your use of the pack:
- If it is for short trips where the dog will carry a little equipment, our experience is that most people are happiest with the smaller of the two sizes.
- If you are planning longer trips with heavy loads, and the dog is well-trained and has decent ground clearance, you can choose the larger of the two sizes.
Ground clearance means that the dog has a certain height, ensuring it doesn't drag the pack too far down against the vegetation.
Togo pack sizes (AA-measurement):
- Mini from 43 cm minimum AA-measurement
- Mini+ approx. 48 cm
- XXS approx. 57 cm
- XS approx. 61 cm
- S approx. 65 cm
- M approx. 71 cm
- L approx. 82 cm
- XL approx. 92 cm
How old must the dog be to carry a pack?
It is an advantage if the dog is fully grown so that you can choose a pack size that will fit long-term. However, an empty pack does not weigh much more than a thick blanket, so getting the dog used to having something on its back with low weight is only positive. You should expect that you will only be able to achieve good carrying capacity with a pack once the dog is 18 months old.
How heavy a pack can the dog carry?
How you work with your dog from an early age is up to you as a dog owner. Is the dog used to hiking and is it a healthy and strong dog? Have you been diligent in developing the dog with hikes in varied terrain? Large dogs develop more slowly than small dogs. Remember to always start carefully with weight when you begin packing. Watch how the dog walks; if you see that it is struggling, it is too much weight. If the dog trots along easily, you can add more. As mentioned in the paragraph above, your dog must be fully grown before you can load it with any significant weight. A rule of thumb is that a very well-trained dog can carry up to 25% of its own body weight if the terrain is easy and the trip is not too long. There is a big difference between walking on flat terrain versus walking in rugged terrain with inclines. Use common sense and remember that you know your dog best, so watch closely and read the signals your dog is giving.
